Social Action Committee

The Social Action Committee, with the help of the entire congregation and leadership, works together year-round to advance the values of Tikkun Olam, or repairing the world.

Our Committee supports a broad range of social justice issues in Burlington and Camden Counties, notably poverty, hunger and homelessness, and offers a range of volunteer opportunities for congregants. Volunteer activities include preparing meals and making sandwiches for area shelters, providing breakfast support in Camden for the homeless, and collecting personal care items, food, and clothing to distribute to local shelters.

The Committee participates in these initiatives:

· St Paul’s Church Interfaith Homeless Outreach Breakfast program, which provides breakfast each Sunday for the homeless and underserved population in Camden. Our Committee participates the fourth Sunday of each month by providing coffee service and helping to serve breakfast.

· IHOC (Interfaith Homeless Outreach Council), which is a group of volunteer congregations working together to address homeless problems in the area. Our Committee participates in the annual “shoebox” program by collecting personal care items for distribution to area shelters and also sponsors meals for participants in the IHOC Hospitality Program.

· Mitzvah Cooking, whereby Committee volunteers come together at Adath Emanu-El’s kitchen to cook a meal on a bi-monthly basis for Providence House, a women’s domestic abuse shelter in Burlington County.

· Martin Luther King (MLK) Mitzvah Day, in which we join forces with the entire congregation, notably Sisterhood, for a day of service and participation in multiple projects to benefit local charities. The Committee makes box sandwich lunches for Joseph House Shelter in Camden.

The following is an overview of our monthly collection projects:

· Food for the Jewish Family and Children Services’ food pantry on a monthly basis, as well as support the High Holy Day and Purim food drives.

· Used clothing, warm weather coats, gloves, scarves and hats to benefit the Camden homeless population associated with St Paul’s Episcopal Church.

· School bags and school supplies every July-August to benefit area needy children.
